Preemptive scheduling on uniform machines to minimize mean flow time

In this paper we give a polynomial algorithm for problem Q | rj, pj = p, pmtn | ∑ Cj whose complexity status was open yet. The algorithm is based on a reduction of the scheduling problem to a linear program. The crucial condition for implementing the proposed reduction is the known order of job completion times.

Nonlocal and localized analyses of conditional mean transient flow in bounded, randomly heterogeneous porous media

[1] We consider the numerical prediction of transient flow in bounded, randomly heterogeneous porous media driven by random sources, initial heads, and boundary conditions without resorting to Monte Carlo simulation. After applying the Laplace transform to the governing stochastic flow equations, we derive exact nonlocal (integrodifferential) equations for the mean and variance-covariance of tr...

Neck Pinching Dynamics Under Mean Curvature Flow

In this paper we study motion of surfaces of revolution under the mean curvature flow. For an open set of initial conditions close to cylindrical surfaces we show that the solution forms a “neck” which pinches in a finite time at a single point. We also obtain a detailed description of the neck pinching process.

Mean Curvature Blowup in Mean Curvature Flow

In this note we establish that finite-time singularities of the mean curvature flow of compact Riemannian submanifolds M t →֒ (N, h) are characterised by the blow up of the mean curvature.

Asymptotic behaviour of randomly reflecting billiards in unbounded tubular domains

We study stochastic billiards in infinite planar domains with curvilinear boundaries: that is, piecewise deterministic motion with randomness introduced via random reflections at the domain boundary. Physical motivation for the process originates with ideal gas models in the Knudsen regime, with particles reflecting off microscopically rough surfaces. We classify the process into recurrent and ...
